Most hotels run one creative and hope for the best. A/B testing lets you run 2 images at the same time and let the data decide. Here is how to do it without technical complexity.
Most hotel marketers pick a photo they like and run it. Maybe it is the pool at golden hour. Maybe it is a family smiling at breakfast. The choice is usually based on gut feeling or what looked good in the last photoshoot.
The problem: your gut does not know which image makes guests click "Book now." Your guests do. A/B testing is how you let them tell you.
What A/B testing actually means

The system splits your visitors randomly: half see A, half see B. After enough data, you compare the click-through rates and keep the winner.
That is the whole idea. No statistics degree required.
What should you test
Start with images. They have the biggest impact on click-through rate and are easy to swap. Common tests that produce clear results:
- Emotional vs. functional: a couple on the terrace vs. a photo of the room itself
- Interior vs. exterior: inside the hotel vs. the building or surroundings
- People vs. no people: a guest in the pool vs. the pool empty
- Seasonal vs. evergreen: a Christmas promo image vs. a year-round offer
You do not need to test headline copy at the same time. Isolate one variable per test, otherwise you will not know what caused the difference.
How long should a test run
Long enough to reach a statistically meaningful number of impressions. For most independent hotels, that means at least 500 impressions per variant before drawing conclusions. If your site gets 1,000 visitors per month, that is roughly a 1-month test for a widget that 100% of visitors see.
Do not stop a test early because one variant looks like it is winning after day 3. Early results are noisy. Give it time.
What if both variants perform the same
Then you keep either one and test something else. Same click-through rate with different images can mean the headline or offer matters more than the photo. That is useful information.
Does it require cookies
Traditional A/B testing platforms set a cookie to remember which variant each visitor was assigned to, so they always see the same version. This requires consent under GDPR in the EEA.
